The College of Education for Girls / University of Shatrah, Department of Biology, organised a scientific seminar entitled
«Antibiotic Resistance: Challenges and Solutions», in the Discussion Hall.
The seminar was presented by:
Asst. Lect. Ahmed Kadhim Hammoud Inad
Biologist Shaimaa Kadhim
The seminar addressed the most prominent aspects of the phenomenon of bacterial resistance to antibiotics, which is considered one of the most important contemporary health problems because of the growing threat it poses to the effectiveness of medical treatments and the safety of society.
The seminar introduced antibiotics and their different types, explained the types of target bacteria, as well as the vital sites within the bacterial cell targeted by antibiotics, such as the cell wall, ribosomes, nucleic acid and the enzymes responsible for bacterial reproduction.
The seminar also included a detailed presentation of the causes of the emergence of bacterial resistance as a result of the irrational use of antibiotics in the medical and environmental fields, and explained the health and economic effects of the spread of resistant strains. The lecturer discussed the proposed scientific and preventive strategies to curb the phenomenon, through accurate diagnosis, adherence to doctors' recommendations and spreading a culture of safe antibiotic use.
The seminar recommended the need to enhance health awareness among members of society about the dangers of the random use of antibiotics, to encourage scientific research that contributes to developing effective therapeutic alternatives, and stressed the importance of coordination between academic and health institutions to confront this global challenge.
At the conclusion of the seminar, the floor was opened for discussion, and many contributions and proposals were made that enriched the topic and helped achieve the objectives of the scientific seminar.
