College of Education / Al-Dawaia
✨ organises a cultural seminar on the archaeological sites in Al-Dawaia District
Under the patronage of the President of the University of Shatrah, Prof. Dr. Basim Abdul-Hussein Jarallah, and in cooperation with the Italian Archaeological Mission, as part of its scientific and cultural activities, the College of Education / Al-Dawaia held a distinguished seminar addressing the archaeological sites in the district, in the presence of a select group of professors and students and with the participation of the Italian mission team specialising in excavation.
The seminar highlighted three important archaeological sites that are among the most prominent Sumerian kingdoms that flourished more than five thousand years ago:
✅ Tello: the political capital of the kingdom
✅ Al-Hiba: the centre of economic activity
✅ Zurghul: the site of the temple dedicated to the gods
The archaeological team reviewed its field achievements, including the discovery of a clay tablet written in the Sumerian language at the Zurghul site, the first of its kind to be discovered at this historic site.
The mission team includes a select group of scholars headed by Professor David, along with professors and postgraduate students (PhD and Master's) from the University of Rome. This work is carried out under an official contract with the Iraqi Ministry of Culture and Antiquities, after ten years of continuous work at these sites.
The seminar was the result of direct coordination between the Dean of the College, Asst. Prof. Dr. Safaa Hussein Ali, and Mr. Hassan Kareem Hawas, Director of Antiquities and Heritage of Al-Shatrah, which contributed to the success of this distinguished scientific activity.
The team received an official welcome from the Dean of the College and a number of professors and students. The seminar featured valuable scientific contributions from the Dean, faculty members and students, while Dr. Tahseen undertook the task of interpreting between the attendees and the members of the mission, which gave the meeting an enriching scientific interaction.
